LIP READING
Hearing loss can happen at any age, but it is more common in older people. If you begin to notice a decline in your hearing ability, you should consult an audiologist who can prescribe hearing aids. Hearing aids may not be as effective as they used to be. As your hearing declines, you will need other methods of understanding people. Lip reading is a great option.
It is much easier to understand speech if someone becomes deaf later in their lives. Lip reading involves interpreting the movements of the lips and tongue. Lip reading is also aided by facial expressions and body language. They help deaf people understand the tone and emotion behind the words.
Because this helps to distinguish between words and narrows vocabulary, lip readers must also be aware of the context. Many words sound alike and can be uttered using the same lips movements. Even the most skilled lip reader can only distinguish around 30% of the English language words. Understanding the context of the conversation can help them determine which word you are using. If you’re having a conversation about weather, for example, the person will say sun and not son.
These sounds can help people who have some residual hearing to improve their lip reading accuracy.
It takes practice to learn how to lip-read, especially if you are born deaf or have lost your hearing early in life. An audiologist can help you find classes in lip-reading if you ask. If you’re in the area, come visit Pensacola’s best hearing center.
SIGN LANGUAGE
Because they can distinguish between different words and not confuse, sign language allows deaf people to communicate more accurately. All over the globe, there are many different types of sign language. There are three types of sign language used in the United States: American Sign Language; Pidgin Signed English; and Signing Exact English.
American Sign Language, a visual language with its own grammar rules and distinct from spoken languages, is purely visual. Non-verbal persons can understand basic concepts because of its graphic nature. American Sign Language is not a language that can be written, but can be translated.
Pidgin SignedEnglish is the most popular form of sign language in America. Although the vocabulary is derived from American Sign Language, it has the same structure and meaning as spoken English. Simple words that don’t carry any information are removed from sentences. This allows people to sign simultaneously with speaking, as it is easier to follow sentences.
Signing Exact English is an attempt to imitate spoken English as closely as possible. It is based on American Sign Language. However, it allows for more detailed sentences and tenses. In American Sign Language, for example, you have one sign that represents all synonyms for the word beauty. Signing Exact English however allows you to use the sign P with the suffix, -full for the word pretty, or the sign B with the suffix, -full for beautiful.
