What is a hearing test?

The audiologist will conduct an examination to determine your hearing ability (audiological function), and ask you about your medical history. Your medical history is important in determining the cause of your hearing loss. It will also include questions about your family history, health history, and any medications you are taking.

An otoscope is used for a physical examination of the ears. It allows the doctor to view inside your ear canals. The audiologist can check for signs of trauma, infection, and blockages.

Next, you will need to have several hearing tests done in order to determine the volume and pitch of your sounds and how your middle ears work.

These tests enable the audiologist to determine the source of your hearing loss.

Do hearing aids always need to be used in treatment?

Not necessarily. Audiologists can help with many types of hearing loss. They can fit hearing aids and treat other causes. Permanent hearing loss is often caused by noise, trauma, aging and medicine. An infection, allergies, fluid inside the ear, or impacted earwax can cause temporary and sometimes permanent hearing impairment. These and other problems can be treated by an Audiologist.

Audiologists are also able to evaluate and treat hearing loss in all ages.

The audiologist will help you decide which type of hearing aid is best for your hearing loss. Audiologists can fit hearing aids behind the ear, in your canal, and in the ear. They can also fit and program your hearing aids and teach you how to use them correctly.

How can you prepare for your appointment

Doing some research on hearing issues before the appointment is a good idea. Also, make sure to write down any questions. Bring a list of any medications and health problems. Note where and when you have difficulty understanding speech or hearing sounds. To help you take notes and ask questions, it’s a good idea if you bring a relative or friend along to your first appointment.

It makes sense to do the same preparations before a big purchase or a long journey. It should not be difficult to find questions for an audiologist before or during your visit after looking on the internet and asking family members about their experiences.
