Congratulations! The first step to better hearing is scheduling a hearing exam. If you’re in the area, come visit Pensacola’s best hearing center. These five steps will help you prepare for your appointment and make the most of it.
1. Flu and colds
Do you know how muffled your hearing can be when you have the flu or a cold? The reason is that the tubes connecting your ears and your throat get blocked. This causes pressure changes in the middle ear, which can then press on the drums of the ears and reduce your ability to hear.
The hearing test also includes a measurement of the movement and movement of the eardrum and small bones in the middle of the ear. They may become more sensitive if you have a cold.
This is why it’s best to have your hearing tested when you’re well. If you are feeling unwell, it is worth rescheduling.
2. Wax removal
A buildup of wax in the ear canal can cause hearing loss, just like wearing earplugs. Waxy ears can cause artificial hearing because the hearing test measures the volume of soft and loud sounds that you can hear.
It is a good idea for your ears to be cleaned a few days before the hearing test. The audiology clinic can help you if there is a buildup of wax. Your physician may also recommend someone to professionally syringe your ears.
You can also buy ear cleaners and use them for several days consecutively during the week before your appointment.
3. Quiet time
Exposure to loud sounds can artificially reduce our ability to hear. This is what happens after you attend a loud concert or nightclub. You stumble away, but then find yourself having a conversation.
To avoid false results, you should not be exposed to loud noises during the hours leading up the appointment. You don’t have to be in isolation; however, you should avoid listening to loud music at the maximum volume during the hours leading up to the appointment.
4. List of questions
If you have hearing loss, write down any questions that you may have for the audiologist. You might want to know:
- What happens if you do nothing?
- Would you recommend a hearing aid?
- What will my hearing aid look like?
- What options are available for hearing aids?
You can plan ahead and write down your questions to ensure you have all the information you need.
5. Refer a friend
You might consider inviting a friend or relative along to your appointment. It is perfectly normal, and many people do this.
An extra pair of ears can help you to be more informed and make an informed decision about your hearing health.
