There are many types of hearing loss. Hearing aids don’t come in the same style. Although all hearing aids can improve or enhance your ability to hear, they are not the same. Hearing aids vary in size, function, and usage.

Individuals’ age and lifestyle will play a major role in the type of hearing aid they choose. Individuals can choose from six types of hearing aids.

There are many types of hearing aids:

  • IIC (Invisible-in-canal) hearing aids: IIC hearing devices are customized to each individual. These hearing aids are more discreet than other styles because they are placed deeper in the ear. IIC aids are suitable for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.
  • Completely-in-canal (CIC) devices: Like IIC devices, CIC aids are custom-made devices. CIC hearing aids fit completely inside the ear canal, with the exception of a small plastic handle or grip that allows the user to insert and take out the aid. These aids are suitable for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.
  • ITC (In-the-Canal) hearing aids: ITC aids are similar to CIC and IIC aids. They fit within the ear canal. These custom-made hearing aids are smaller than the other types. ITC hearing aids are suitable for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.
  • In-the-ear (ITE), hearing aids: These aids fit inside the outer part of the ear. These custom-made hearing aids are suitable for people with mild to severe hearing loss.
  • Receiver-in canal (RIC), devices: RIC aids, just like the IIC devices are almost invisible when worn. These aids have a receiver (or speaker) that fits inside the ear canal. This allows for an open fitting and comfortable fit. These hearing aids are suitable for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.
  • BTE (behind-the-ear) hearing aids: These are the most commonly used types of hearing aids. BTE devices can be custom-made and inserted in the ear canal.
