Everybody benefits from tender loving care (TLC). Your hearing aid is no exception.

It is easy to take care of your hearing aid. It will pay you back with years of sharp, clear service. This makes it a worthwhile investment to take a few minutes each day.

Let’s see how easy it is to maintain your device in top shape.

#1: DON’T MISS IT EVERYDAY

As you would brush your teeth and style your hair every day, it is important to establish a routine for cleaning your hearing aids. Regular maintenance of your hearing aid will make it easier and more natural.

Remember that the reward is a hearing aid that you can use every day, and it works flawlessly.

#2: PREPARE PROPERLY

Cleaning is easier when you have a few basic tools at your disposal. These are some of the more affordable options:

  • Soft cloth
  • Multi-tool that includes a wax pick, ear mold brush, and wax pick
  • Bulb puffer
  • A hearing device dehumidifier

Also, place a towel on the table where you intend to clean the device. If the device slips, this will prevent accidental damage and soften its landing.

#3: REMOVE YOUR BATTERY

To remove any moisture, take out the battery and wipe it clean with a soft cloth.

Use the soft cloth for wiping out the interior of the battery compartment. Blot any electrical contacts to remove any condensation that may have built up over time.

Overnight, leave the compartment door unlocked.

#4: REMOVE THE DEVICE

Use a soft, clean cloth to wipe the casing of your device. This will help remove any natural oils that may have been transferred from your skin throughout the day. Daily cleaning helps reduce the likelihood of switches and dials becoming clogged.

#5: CHECK YOUR WAX

Examine the ear mold to check for any wax ingress. To remove the wax, use the small hook at the end of your multi-tool. It is important to not push the wax in any deeper than necessary. This is why you will need a specially designed tool.

#6: CLEAN THE TUBING

Take a close look at the tubing to check for condensation. To get rid of moisture, remove the tubing from its body and gently flick it. To blow the liquid out, you can attach a bulb puffer. Avoid blowing down the tube. The moisture from your breath can cause the problem.

#7: POP INTO A DEHUMIDIFIER

Put your hearing aid and tubing in the dehumidifier overnight. These devices are very affordable and only a few dollars. They retain moisture and keep the delicate electronic components of the device in top condition.

Don’t be afraid to ask your audiologist any questions. They’ll be happy to help you with any questions or to provide guidance on how to keep your device functioning properly.
