The idea of wearing hearing aids can be overwhelming. If you think you might benefit from hearing aids, you should make an appointment to see an audiologist. Although you might be familiar with the hearing test, what happens next? A hearing aid fitting.

1. WHY IS THIS A SEPARATE TIME APPOINTMENT

While some styles of hearing aids do not require an earmold that is specially designed, others do. After your hearing exam, your audiologist will take an impression to determine if the hearing aid you are most benefit from requires an earmold. The manufacturer will use the impression to make your hearing aids. The hearing aids will take a few weeks to reach the audiologist. After the programming is complete, the hearing aids are ready for testing for fit and sound.

2. ARE THERE OTHER TESTS?

Yes, the appointment includes a sound test. To measure the response of your eardrum to different volumes, a thin tube is inserted into your ear canal. Your hearing aids are used again to perform the test. The thin tube is used to measure the response of your eardrum to sound. Your audiologist will use these measurements to adjust the frequency and amplification to allow you to hear all sounds clearly. After wearing your hearing aids for several days, adjustments may be necessary.

3. CAN I WEAR HEARING AIDS THE DAY AFTER WORK?

After fitting, your hearing aids will be worn for about an hour. You will need to adjust to the sound you hear and how they fit. Over the next week, you will increase the time you wear them. You should start wearing your hearing aids in quiet environments and gradually move up to noisy places like restaurants. Your brain will need to adjust to new sounds over the next few days. It is possible that you may initially find your voice and other voices a bit funny. It’s normal. For adjustments, contact your audiologist if you are not satisfied with the fit or sound.

4. MY FITTING INCLUDES INFORMATION ABOUT MY HEALING AIDS.

You might be a little hesitant about hearing aids’ cost if you consider how to best care for them. There’s nothing to be concerned about. Your audiologist will show you how to insert, remove and clean your hearing aids. You will learn how to adjust the volume and change the batteries, as well as any other details specific to your model. Although it may seem like a lot, you will be able to refer to the material at home. For any questions, please call the office.

These questions will help you prepare for your appointment. You can then get ready to wear your hearing aids!
