A hearing exam doesn’t look like a college exam. It doesn’t matter if you revise or spend the night trying to get as much information in as possible. It is still a good idea, however, to be prepared. Here are some easy steps to prepare for your hearing test.
Notify your doctor about any medical issues
Your hearing specialist will ask you questions about your hearing and general health. It’s helpful to keep track of any previous procedures, medications you are currently taking, or any past allergies. Before your audiologist can start the test or suggest possible treatment options, it is important to have this information.
Get your ears cleaned
Although your ears are equipped with sophisticated self-cleaning mechanisms that can remove debris and ward off earwax, they are susceptible to getting clogged up. It is a good idea for you to clean your ears before you go for a hearing test. Avoid using cotton buds as they can be dangerous to your ears. Instead, use a damp cloth to gently clean your ears. Your audiologist will examine your ears with an instrument called the otoscope to determine if there is excessive wax. Your audiologist can recommend ways to address excessive wax.
Create a list of questions
Hearing tests can seem daunting for some, while others find it daunting to go into an appointment. It’s easy to forget the questions you had in your head before, so it’s a good idea to bring a list with you to the appointment.
Avoid loud noises
It’s a good idea to avoid loud environments if you have a hearing test scheduled. Loud noises can cause hearing damage, such as music from a gig. Try to avoid noisy environments for at most 12 hours before you have your hearing test. You should wear ear protection if you work in noisy environments, such as a construction site. If you are feeling unwell, schedule a reschedule
A cold, flu or sinusitis can affect your hearing and may impact the results of your hearing tests. Call your audiologist if you have a cold or the flu within 48 hours of your hearing test. They can arrange for you to feel better.
You don’t have to be anxious about a hearing test. However, there are some things you can do. You can take down any information you need, write down questions that you would like to ask, and clean your ears. If you are ill, it is best to avoid having your hearing tested. Also, try to avoid noisy places for at least 12 hours prior to your hearing test.
