Q: I am scheduled for a follow-up appointment with my hearing aid specialist. What should I expect?

A: Better hearing takes time. Your follow-up hearing aid appointment is an important step in that journey. You’ll be more successful if you’re prepared for the follow up. Let’s take an in-depth look.

The Preparation

Between now and the follow-up, take note of how your hearing aids are doing. What situations are they most comfortable in? What environments are most challenging? What are the most important people in your life that you don’t know? Are you having trouble with the battery doors? Are they causing you discomfort? Bring your notes and any questions to your appointment.

The Conversation

This is the core of follow-up. Your provider will ask questions of you, and vice versa. Your provider will appreciate any feedback that you provide. Your provider will learn valuable information about you hearing aid settings from every environment that presents a challenge. The same goes for any loved one whose voice isn’t right.

The psychological and emotional components are also important. Your provider will ask you to describe how you feel about the hearing aids. This includes what you liked and didn’t like, expectations that were met and those that weren’t. Your provider will also appreciate this feedback. You can never have too much feedback during a follow up appointment. If you’re in the area, come visit Pensacola’s best hearing center.

The Refresher

Your fitting appointment and evaluation revealed a lot. Your follow-up appointment will focus on the maintenance and care of your devices. A refresher course will be given on the functions of each program, their access, and how to use your smartphone app, if necessary.

The Adjustments

Your provider will use all the feedback you provide to adjust your devices. Your provider may add new programs, tweak existing ones, or provide you with other domes and tubing.

Your feedback might indicate that your brain and ears are not working well together after years of hearing loss. You may be given exercises to strengthen the ear-brain connection. It is a lot like rehabilitation after an injury. It will likely be done at your home computer.

The Next Step

Most likely, your provider will schedule another follow up for a few weeks.

The sooner you make adjustments or assign exercises, the better. Your provider will try to identify issues as quickly as possible. Your provider wants you to succeed on your better hearing journey as much as they do.
