Falls and accidents are more likely to occur when there is hearing loss
It is tempting to think that hearing loss affects only your ears. It seems as though hearing loss should only affect the areas of the body that it is most severe. Recent research shows that this is not the case. Accidents and falls are also more common with hearing loss.
This is bad news for many people as hearing loss has become almost a badge of honor. Instead of visiting an audiologist, learn to accept the impact it has on your life. This is easier if the problem is purely hearing related. It’s crucial to correct the problem if it causes your balance to be in doubt. What were the results?
These results are based on a study that was approved by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. 232.2 million adults were ranked according to their hearing loss. This equated roughly 15% of the 34.5 million people surveyed.
Nearly three percent of the 35 million adult respondents who had experienced hearing loss said that they had been injured within three month of responding to the survey. According to the CDC, people with mild or moderate hearing loss are 60% to 70% more likely than others to get hurt.
The topic is not covered in this report alone. To determine if hearing loss and accidents are connected, a doctor at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Boston conducted a study. He discovered that 6.6 million people suffered from an accidental injury. Only 16% of those who had been affected rated their hearing as poor.
What can this mean for you?
This is due to the high prevalence of hearing loss in America. About 50 million Americans have some hearing loss. The likelihood of hearing loss occurring increases with age. This means that your risk is higher as you age. You are potentially putting yourself at risk by not understanding how your body is exposed, whether you’re driving or walking on the streets.
What are the benefits to intervening?
Both knowing that you need to intervene and actually doing so are two distinct things. You might think you’re fine, but buying hearing aids won’t change your life. You will experience more than hearing loss. It will improve your ability to avoid falls and trips. You will also experience:
Better social life: It’s difficult to keep up with and add to conversations when you don’t understand what’s being said. It can be embarrassing for some people to feel like they are a burden to family and friends. You might find it difficult to see loved ones. You can regain your normal life and surround yourself with people who love and care about you by solving your hearing loss.
There is less chance of developing mental illness. One direct consequence of being isolated is that you may have mental health issues. If depression isn’t addressed properly, it can lead to more depression. There is also a connection between having no social life and developing Alzheimer’s or dementia. You can protect your future health by taking care now of your hearing loss.
Cognitive function increases: This is because the brain uses different elements in order to compensate for the loss of hearing. The pressure can cause other functions to feel it and may decline faster. This is called brain atrophy. A factory reset is a method of restoring hearing that can improve cognitive function.
There are many reasons to treat hearing loss other than preventing falls and trips. There are many benefits.
The solution
It’s easy to take care of your hearing. Although it is not ranked as high as other areas of one’s well being, it is just as important because of the possible side-effects that could occur if something goes wrong. If you need help with hearing loss, the audiologist is a great resource.
Talking to an audiologist can help you determine what is wrong, why it is happening and what you can do about it. This is a huge step in the right direction, regardless of whether you want to prevent falls or accidents or stay socially active.
